Rekordbox Says Files Are Missing After Moving Music

How to reason about missing Rekordbox files after moving folders, changing drives, or reorganizing a DJ music archive.

Rekordbox can show a track in a playlist while reporting that the file is missing. Usually the playlist entry still exists, but the database path no longer points to the file after a folder move, drive change, rename, or disconnected external disk.

Use a controlled repair sequence

  1. Reconnect the drive that originally contained the music.
  2. Check whether the folder was renamed or moved to a new volume.
  3. Use Rekordbox's missing-file or relocate workflow on a small representative set first.
  4. Play the repaired tracks and create a fresh backup once the paths are stable.

Prevent the next broken path

Keep the library database and source folders backed up together. Avoid moving a large archive while a DJ application is open, and make one deliberate folder convention for downloads, edits, and finished tracks. A phone companion can help you review what is available, but it cannot repair a source path that the desktop library has lost.

Once the archive is healthy, browse it from your phone without creating a second catalog.
